Latino Memphis Day of the Dead Fiesta

Curating experiences for myself is an important lifestyle goal I have and will always cherish. It's my mission as a woman to be cultured and aware and accepting of traditions of all cultural groups. Embracing the Mexican holiday, Dia de Los Muertos in complete totality for me this year was a significant moment. I knew that experiencing Day of the Dead Fiesta by Latino Memphis would be more than a Friday date night for myself and my Mexican boyfriend. It would be a moment to be inspired and find the beauty in the work I already do in honoring my loved ones.

The Columns was a fitting atmosphere for last Friday night’s Latino Memphis Day of the Dead Fiesta. The room with it's, architectural columns and colorful lights, was filled with artful and festive decor, great music and food and beautiful people. The signature event, Day of the Dead is a celebration of the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. It's a cultural celebration of LIFE, a Mexican holiday built on traditional values of honoring loved ones who have passed away.  It was done in style with partygoers dressed in a fashion-themed and vibrant face art.

The party was energetic and beyond a great time. I love a good party with a great cause. There was so much to take in like Aztec dancers, a folklore dance group Herencia Hispana, a hip hop meets salsa performance by Edgar Mendez of Salsa Memphis and New Ballet Ensemble. I really enjoyed people getting giddy and excited over the  sugar skull-inspired face painting and handmade flower making stations.

We danced and danced and danced all night!!!!!!! All the latest in bachata, salsa, merinque, and more was provided by lol DJ Moi. Man was it so cool. Everyone looked so great too!!! Beautiful textures and prints and bold colors inspired me and really made me view the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos so differently. Not that I thought bad of it at all. BUT, I didn't realize how colors and sounds would inspire me to be proud to celebrate life and my ancestors.
