We’re doing work we love, work that inspires us, and we’re also pursuing our passions and making them priorities. In our latest Working Girl series, I sat down for a little girl talk with my gal pal and and lifestyle blogger + visual content creator of KP Fusion Kim Thomas. Meet Kim ....
DO YOU HAVE ANY UNEXPECTED SOURCES OF CREATIVE INSPIRATION, IF SO WHAT ARE THEY?
I find inspiration in the usual suspects: art, people watching, magazines, etc. Music is a big inspiration as well. I have older siblings (2 brothers), but once they hit a certain age and realized I was a girl, I stopped being able to tag along and had to learn how to entertain myself, lol. Because of this, I have a crazy imagination and good music can always inspire me to go to a new place in my head or try something different.
HOW DOES YOUR CURRENT WORK INFLUENCE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Now that I'm a full time photographer and blogger, I can pretty much wear whatever I want, which is refreshing but scary at the same time, lol. It took a minute for me to embrace it, but now I'm being a lot more experimental with what I shop for and wear. I'll probably always be classic with a twist at my core, but I have fun playing with trends. I don't dress up ever day (who's running around taking pictures in stilettos???), but my work motivates me to try to be polished and cute when I walk out of my door.
WHAT IS ONE QUESTION YOU WISH PEOPLE ASKED YOU MORE OF?
How are you able to build relationships with people? (The secret is finding a fun ice breaker (compliment their shoes or clothing, for example) and then talk to them as if you've known them for years. They're just people, lol. Once someone feels comfortable with you, they will feel more confident in referring you for certain things, and that's how your network will grow.
WHAT ARE 5 OF YOUR DAILY HABITS?
Say a thank you prayer once I wake up
Check the weather forecast so that I know what to wear (I always want it to be cooler!)
Listen to a podcast or music (my music mood changes daily)
Do a quick rundown for my to-do list and work on my blog
HOW DO YOU THINK WORKING IN A CREATIVE INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTES TO SOME OF THE WORLD’S BIGGER CONVERSATIONS AND WHAT ROLE IS YOUR WORK PLAYING IN THIS SHIFT IN THINKING?
Being in the creative industry means that you can be an innovator of ideas. Even if you choose to niche down in your chosen field, you interact with so many different personalities, so you learn to approach people differently and be open to other ideas. That stays with a person beyond a photo shoot, and can hopefully influence them to do the same thing. Speaking for my work and how it affects others, I'm also helping people achieve their dreams/goals and (hopefully) grow their brand, so to be a part of that process (to know that your work can help someone land a job or client), is a pretty cool feeling.
HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE WOMEN WHO ARE MAKERS, CREATIVE/FASHION PROFESSIONALS OR PEOPLE IN GENERAL TO LEAVE IN AN IMPRINT IN THE DIGITAL WORLD JUST BY DOING WHAT THEY LOVE?
I'd advise them of 3 things:
1.) Always be authentic. Be inspired by what you see and hear, but always keep your authentic voice. Understand how to work with trends within your field, but always maintain your unique perspective on things so that your voice can make an impact.
2.) Learn the art of storytelling. It's game-changing, no matter what you do.
3.) Don't be afraid to create WHATEVER YOU WANT. There's always room for a new voice with fresh ideas, so don't let the silly fear of "over-saturation" stop you from taking a leap and making your own little space on the internet.
IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH THREE BRANDS OR INFLUENCERS WHO WOULD THEY BE, AND WHY?
Target (because it's the happiest place on earth and I'd shop there every day if my budget permitted), Rachel Zoe (because she changed the styling game while also showing that you don't have to limit yourself to one "role" in your career), and Emily Schuman (Cupcakes & Cashmere) because she's been my barometer for blogging success since I started. 9 years ago she launched a personal style blog out of boredom and now she has a multi-million dollar lifestyle brand (clothing, decor, etc), best-selling books, fun brand collabs, and she STILL runs her blog. If that doesn't show the power of blogging, I don't know what does! What would we collab on? I have no clue, but I know that it would be stylish, modern and fun!
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS A BRAND AND INFLUENCER GOING INTO THE FUTURE?
I hope to own a natural light studio so that I can continue to work with small lifestyle businesses, bloggers and other creatives while continuing to use my blog to share fun fashion, beauty and lifestyle content. There are a few things I'd like to do on a local level (I love Memphis and would love to show more of what it offers through my own unique lens) and I want to take this (KP FUSION) show on the road!
