It's weird knowing I have officially closed out my prom design season. I still am in disbelief that I had the pleasure of making so many prom dreams a reality. My last prom doll got glam and headed to her prom in a byAndreaFenise dress.
So here's our story and the look....
Renesha emailed a picture of Vanessa Bryant in a Saint Laurent Tuxedo dress from the Spring 2013 Collection. I got geeked instantly. Well, because I've been sent this image numerous times but never had the chance to make it. I thought to myself wow she's different. Well the look wasn't for Renesha, it was for her baby sister, Renea.
As always when a client requests a custom garment to be made there isn't a commercial pattern. I have to analyze and dissect the picture to develop a pattern. I take into consideration specifications from the client as well. Renea wanted to change the front of the dress and make it prom appropriate. We changed the skirt a bit from pencil to circle to give her more volume. Everything else would remain the same as she wanted to reference as much of the look as possible.
The pattern was developed and all of my pieces were cut then fast forward 4 hours later...
One of the things I love is that I also use my styling services when working with my clients. We wanted to pull of the entire look so the blouse and the ascot were key visual references. We sourced the blouse from Men's Warehouse. I knew a male shirt would have much wider sleeve cuffs and a more prominent collar. The ascot well of course I made it, that was pretty simple.
What I enjoyed the most was the lesson learned in knowing my abilities as a designer are growing. I mean I feel proud to know I've looked at so many major designers work and recreated them and feel confident that I did their work design justice.
