Sophorn Kuoy of norococo

I remember the evening I first met Sophorn. We both were standing in  a crowded room at a fundraising event celebrating Dress for Success Memphis with some of Memphis's most influential women. I was eavesdropping on conversations to figure out who I should talk that I would possibly have something in common with.

See back then I hadn't mastered the whole "networking" thing. So..I had to do it, just walk over and introduce myself to these two young women who were dressed so stylish.  I said to myself "Ok they have to something in common with me."  I met Sophorn!! More like I found a new "girl crush" lol.

I would never have known this petite powerhouse would have so many beautifully packaged layers of talent. She works in  architecture design, graphic design, photography, writing, I'll try to stop here.  In the years, I have known Sophorn I have learned so much from her inadvertently. So here's your chance to get to know Sophorn. You don't have to be a total creep like me, I'll give you the honors of "formally" meeting her.

MEET...Sophorn for norococo

In the Working Girl series, my goal is to talk to women who have created a path of their own, who are designing their own lives and working toward a dream of building the life they desire. Because Sophorn is so creative and talented I thought it would serve better justice to get to know her more..what she likes, her daily creative habits, what inspires her, and what's up next for her after all she is always working on a new "project".

+AS A CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL, SHARE WITH US 5 OF YOUR DAILY CREATIVE HABITS?

1. Look at inspiring design on ARCH DAILY and MR.CUP

 2. Put on a calm music playlist for mental clarity artists like Alt-j, Ben Howard or Bon Iver. I’m currently listening to the playlist “take it easy” on 8tracks

3. Make a very specific task by task to-do list including a list of people to reach out to for the day.

4. Sketch or write - think on paper.

5. Take time to daydream.

+ HOW DOES ARCHITECTURE INFLUENCE YOUR DESIGN WORK & VICE VERSA?

Architecture school and the profession taught me to design all things with sensitivity and depth. Design is also about relationship building. The design process can involve a lot of people and thus many ideas mix, evolve and get refined into something everyone can take pride in. Enjoy the process as much as the end result.

+ WHAT ARE 3 OF YOUR FAVORITE BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD?

Andrea-Fenise-Working-Girl-Sophorn

Chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Haut at Ronchamp, France by Le Corbusier - I’ve loved this building since architecture school. The form is beautifully simple and is topped with an elegant roof. It's a shame it was vandalized last year.

41 Cooper Square in NYC by Morphosis Architects - The metal skin wraps the building to create a dynamic form, and the building signage is creatively integrated in the skin instead of just stuck on.

28th Street Apartments in Los Angeles, CA by Koning Eizenberg - This project was a constant go-to reference when I worked on a recent studio apartment building project in Memphis for LRK. Again another use of metal skin drapes the exterior. It’s a well-detailed project that is also socially and environmentally conscious. So much to admire about it.

here's an extra pick.. Cambodian Genocide Institute by Zaha Hadid. Not built yet but I’m personally excited about this project since it honors the history and advancement of my home country.

+ YOU ARE BALANCING SO MANY JOBS LIKE MANY OF US. ONE OF THEM BEING MOTHERHOOD, WHAT ARE 3 PIECES OF ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO OFFER OTHER MOMS?

DSC00219-2a.jpg

1. Don’t be too hard on yourself about being the perfect parent.

2. Interact with people with the belief that you can learn something valuable from them and that includes your own kids.

3. Don’t just take your kids somewhere to play. Play with them. Tap into your inner child and let that out when you’re with them. It helps you relieve some stress too.

+WHAT ABOUT WOMEN WHO AREN'T MOTHERS?

It’s similar to the advice above to moms - not being too hard on yourself if you’re not perfect. It’s a moving a target and you have to constantly redefine it for yourself. Don’t let anyone define it for you. I think my favorite quote by designer/writer Colin Wright to sum it up is “You’re even more amazing than you wish you were.”

+AS A BLOGGER FOR NOROCOCO & WRITER AND PHOTOGRAPHER FOR MEMPHIS FLYER'S STYLE SESSION YOU HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE MEMPHIS. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN MEMPHIS?

Districts or Areas: Shelby Farms, Overton Square, Harbor Town, South Main Street, Cooper Young

Shop: Crazy Beautiful, Spruce, Hoot + Louise, The Attic, The Ivory Closet, Alter Ego
