Design Project : Collage Rise x byAndreaFenise

Hope you all are excited about the weekend. It has been a long and busy yet productive week. I'm going to be working well into the weekend but I'll be working on a project that brings me great joy. You all know I am a proud ballet mom of Collage Dance Collective. I am so humbled to say that I am working on a costume design project for the Rise Concert.

RISE is such an amazing, inspiring and beautiful concert by Collage Dance Collective. Last year, Amira and I attended the concert and we both were in awe. The talent, the production, the music, the costumes everything was beautiful and inspiring. I anticipate the performance every year now. This year guess what?!  I am designing costumes for an entire performance piece and I am so so so excited.

I would never imagine that I would be given the opportunity to design costumes for ballerinas in my life. I've worked for Playhouse on the Square and Theatre Memphis in costume design and now I get my OWN piece to design..HOW COOL?

Designing costumes is quite different than designing everyday wear. You have to take many things into consideration and prepare ahead of time. The process is challenging but it's exhilarating.

RESEARCH & REFERENCE

The first thing I had to do was get inspired... get some creative inspiration and figure out what direction I would go in. I rented one of the best vintage ballet films from Black Lodge. I studied the ballet movement and fabrics to make sure I used the right fabrics. What was so important to me was making sure I brought the byAndreaFenise design aesthetic to costume and performance. I wanted you to be able to see how I interpret ballet, he performance and fashion.

Black Swan was the perfect movie to watch to get ideas for ballet costumes as well. Rodarte did an amazing job on Natalie Portman's costumes. It was so cool to browse the Internet and see how intricate the costumes were.

FITTINGS & FABRICS

I didn't take me long at all to feel it. Feel the energy you know. I sat in on a couple of rehearsals and watched the dancers move, expressions, hear the music and YES I was ready. I found the perfect fabrics to creatively translate the meaning of the dance and make it very relevant to the choreography.
